Messereroi village took its name from the ancient Holero. It is located 10km north of Ierapetra in an altitude of 360m.
Village with a long history and tradition, Meseleri, with its roots to over three thousand years in the past. Here was the great ancient city while Wleros from the historical Monastery of Panagia Brywmenis is thought to have started the first revolutionary acts against the Turks in 1821, revealing the great contribution of this place in the ierapetra region but the whole of Crete.
Picturesque and peaceful village with little more than a hundred residents who do everything they can to rescue the great history and to grow in the present and the future. A stroll through the beautiful and thoroughly alleys reveals at once the contrasts of old abandoned houses, with other newly renovated that impress.
In the Centre of the village stands the Church of St John the Baptist, while special interest they have and the temples of Saint George, who according to tradition functioned as a secret school and Saint Marina where preserved frescoes from the 13th century and now serves as a cemetery Church.
The name of Meselerwn due to the great ancient past as it is built on the ancient city of Holero and the Temple of holerias Athena, who is believed to have stood near to the location of the monastery of Panagia Brywmenis.
The monastery of Panagia Brywmenis, just outside the settlement, is arguably not only the most important attraction of the village and one of the greatest monuments of Crete. Built probably in the 14th century, surrounded by a lush landscape with abundant water and a source located beneath the monastery from which fired the Meseleri with water from antiquity. There it is said that it was the first meeting of chieftains of Eastern Crete and coordinated the first actions during the revolution of 1821.
